Alex Lindsay Award

The Alex Lindsay Award was founded in 1975 in memory of former New Zealand Symphony Orchestra Concertmaster Alex Lindsay, who died in 1974. Administered by current players of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, the award aims to support young musicians who are studying and wish to pursue an orchestral career. Since its inception, the award has granted more than $200,000 to young New Zealand musicians. The award provides financial support to promising young musicians in New Zealand who are pursuing studies to develop their skills for orchestral performance. The program is managed by NZSO players who serve as trustees of the Alex Lindsay Awards Trust. The award also administers two additional grants: the Giese Flute Grant for promising young flutists and the Michael Monaghan Award for promising orchestral instrumentalists undertaking further study. This long-standing award represents a commitment to nurturing the next generation of orchestral musicians in New Zealand, providing crucial financial assistance to help talented young musicians advance their studies and career development in orchestral performance.
