About

The Shackleton Foundation provides seed funding and support to early-stage social ventures with a primary focus on benefiting young people in the UK. Established in 2007 by the direct descendants of Sir Ernest Shackleton's 1907/08 Nimrod expedition, the Foundation celebrates the legacy of the legendary polar explorer. Since inception, they have empowered 73 leaders who embody the spirit of Shackleton to make a substantial impact in their communities with innovative organisations that make a positive impact to the lives of disadvantaged young people. The Foundation offers funding and support for those who have a big idea to help others, looking for individuals who display characteristics of courage, dedication and ambition.

Funding Opportunities

Shackleton Foundation Leadership Award

The Shackleton Foundation supports aspiring individuals and social entrepreneurs who exemplify the spirit of Shackleton with seed-funding to help them start their venture. The foundation looks for individuals, often with lived experience, who display courage, resilience and leadership and have a big bold idea to help young people in the UK. Eligible ideas must solely benefit disadvantaged young people (0-25) based in the UK, be from NEW organisations (no more than 12 months old), be innovative and fresh, fulfil a clear need and demand, have a real social impact with well defined outputs and goals, and have the potential for real growth and sustainability. The foundation takes calculated risks in supporting social entrepreneurs who are often considered too risky or early stage. Successful applicants receive seed-funding up to £15,000 as a grant or loan, access to a 'Leader Partner', access to quarterly advice surgeries and an annual Leader's Forum, awareness building for their venture, and introductions to potential second stage funders.

Since inception in 2007, the foundation has empowered 73 leaders who embody the spirit of explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton to make a substantial impact in their communities with innovative organisations that benefit disadvantaged young people. The foundation offers funding and support for those who have a big idea to help others and are prepared to take the risk to turn it into reality. Named after the legendary polar explorer, the foundation seeks individuals who display the same characteristics of courage, dedication and ambition that Shackleton demonstrated in helping others overcome their doubts and fears in the face of true adversity. The program provides first-mile funding to social entrepreneurs tackling youth inequality in the UK.
