The Harvard University Center for African Studies (CAS) is a research and teaching center at Harvard University dedicated to deepening knowledge and understanding of Africa through global connections and communities of learning. Established in 2015, the Center supports faculty and student research on Africa, offers fellowships and funding opportunities for Africa-focused scholarship, hosts academic workshops and distinguished lectures, and builds partnerships across the African continent. Funding Opportunities

FLAS Summer Grants

Through funding from the United States Department of Education, the Center for African Studies offers Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships, providing tuition and stipend support for full-time Harvard University graduate and undergraduate students interested in intensive for-credit study of an African language in the United States or abroad. FLAS Fellowships provide for up to $5,000 towards tuition, and a $3,500 fixed living stipend. The program supports intermediate and advanced-level language study only. Candidates must be US citizens, nationals, or permanent residents, and must be enrolled as continuing full-time students at Harvard University. The program requires participants to complete pre- and post-program self-assessments and undergo evaluation by a language instructor. Applicants must pursue an immersive language program that is at least six weeks in duration and offers at least 140 contact hours, with Harvard transfer credit approval required.
