Funding Opportunities

Aga Khan Foundation International Scholarship Programme

The Aga Khan Foundation's International Scholarship Programme (AKF ISP) is an opportunity for outstanding scholars from selected countries who have no other means of financing their studies to pursue postgraduate education. Established in 1969, the AKF ISP has supported more than 1,500 students to date. Award recipients are selected through a global, annual, and competitive application process, with a limited number of new awards offered in each cycle. The programme gives preference to young professionals under 30 years of age with excellent academic records, genuine financial need, and strong leadership potential. Applicants must hold a Bachelor's degree or equivalent training, be admitted to a reputable postgraduate institution, and be starting the first year of their programme. Priority is given to Master's programmes, but PhD applications are also considered. Awards are structured as half grant and half loan, requiring repayment of 50 percent of the award amount with a guarantor co-signing the agreement. Scholarships for Master's studies cover the entire degree duration, while PhD scholarships are awarded for the first two years. The award covers tuition and student living expenses but excludes international travel, clothing, furniture, or family living expenses. The programme is available in countries including Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, Egypt, India, Kenya, Kyrgyz Republic, Madagascar, Mozambique, New Zealand, Pakistan, Syria, Tajikistan, Tanzania, and Uganda. Applications are also accepted in Canada, Portugal, and the USA from students originally from eligible countries.
