Bernard Lewis Prize
The Bernard Lewis Prize is awarded to scholars or practitioners engaged in the study of issues on antisemitism that were of great importance to ASMEA's founding chairman, Prof. Bernard Lewis. While Christian antisemitism is well-studied, a stigma remains around addressing antisemitism in the Muslim world. Beyond this, relatively few scholars focus on the Middle Eastern dimensions of Christian antisemitism in religious and cultural terms, much less the political impacts in the West. The prize awards published or unpublished work that addresses these issues in the form of an article, book, or book chapter. Recipients of the $2,500 prize will be announced and awarded at the Nineteenth Annual ASMEA Conference in Washington, D.C. on November 7-9, 2026. Additionally, all finalists will present and discuss their work during the Conference.
2026 Travel Grant Program
The ASMEA Travel Grant Program provides funds primarily to Ph.D. students, post-Docs, and junior faculty studying the Middle East or Africa interested in presenting their research at the Annual ASMEA Conference. Funds provided through this program may be used to cover any expenses associated with attending the Annual ASMEA Conference to be held in Washington, D.C. The program supports researchers presenting new and unpublished research relevant to ASMEA's areas of study. Applications must include a paper proposal that represents original research in any academic discipline related to Middle East or African studies. Awards range from $500 to $750 and can be used for hotel, conference registration, transportation, and related costs. The grant does not cover the cost of annual membership. All grant applicants are eligible to win only one grant of any kind in 2026.
ASMEA Research Grant Program 2026
To stimulate new and diverse lines of discourse about the Middle East and Africa, ASMEA's Research Grants Program seeks to support research on topics that deserve greater attention. An applicant may submit a proposal on any topic as long as it is relevant to the fields of Middle East and Africa, and constitutes new and original research. Grants of $2500 will be awarded to support research costs associated with conducting research for the specified proposal. Successful applicants will be required to present their research at the Nineteenth Annual ASMEA Conference in Washington, D.C. Research grant winners also must provide ASMEA the right of first refusal for potential publication of their papers in the peer-reviewed Journal of the Middle East and Africa. All research and writing must be completed by the deadline for final papers, with projects that go into 2027 not being considered.
