Drake Physics Prize

Since 1970, the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Drake University has hosted the Drake Physics Prize Examination. The Physics Prize is offered to encourage interest in physics, astronomy, and physical sciences, and to give recognition to outstanding high-school students. The first place award is an unrestricted four-year, full-tuition scholarship to Drake University, with a variety of other awards also available. The Drake Physics Prize Test covers topics in physics that would normally be studied by students during the first semester of their high-school physics course, including kinematics, dynamics (Newton's laws), circular motion, universal law of gravitation, harmonic motion, impulse, linear momentum, conservation of momentum and collisions, work, energy and conservation of energy, torque, rotational kinematics, dynamics and energy, angular momentum conservation, mechanical waves, and sound. Undergraduate scholarships are available only to students enrolled at the undergraduate level, for up to 4 years total or until a Bachelor's degree is earned (whichever comes first). Scholarships will renew automatically if all renewal requirements are satisfied.

Presidential Scholarships

Presidential Scholarships are merit-based awards offered by Drake University to all full-time undergraduate students admitted directly from high school. The scholarships range from $27,000 to $35,000 per year and are automatically awarded to 100% of eligible first-year students. These scholarships are renewable for up to four years total or until a Bachelor's degree is earned, whichever comes first. Students must enroll in at least 12 credit hours per semester and maintain satisfactory academic progress to retain the scholarship. In some cases, Presidential Scholarships may be funded through gifts from Drake University's generous benefactors, and recipients are notified if they are honored in this way. The scholarship is designed to make Drake University more accessible to incoming students and support their undergraduate education throughout their college career.
