About

The Simons Foundation is a private foundation that advances the frontiers of research in mathematics and the basic sciences. Its grantmaking efforts focus on mathematical and physical sciences, life sciences, autism research, and neuroscience. The foundation supports scientific research through direct funding, collaborative programs, and operates the Flatiron Institute, an in-house research division dedicated to computational science across astrophysics, biology, mathematics, neuroscience, and quantum physics.

Funding Opportunities

Targeted Grants in MPS

The Targeted Grants in MPS program is intended to support high-risk theoretical mathematics, physics and computer science projects of exceptional promise and scientific importance on a case-by-case basis. The program provides flexible funding for up to five years with no fixed funding level, allowing researchers to request appropriate support based on their project needs. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis through a two-stage process beginning with a Letter of Intent.

Pivot Fellowship

The Pivot Fellowship program supports researchers with a strong track record of success and achievement in their current field, and a deep interest, curiosity and drive to make contributions to a new discipline. The fellowship will enable today's brightest minds to apply their talents and expertise to a new field, and will consist of one training year where the fellow will be embedded in a lab of a mentor to learn the new discipline and its culture. Mentorship and support are essential for learning a new discipline and culture. In addition to the qualifications and potential of the applicant, the suitability of the mentor and the environment for mentorship will be strongly considered in the application process. At the end of the fellowship year, fellows may be eligible to apply for a research award in their new field for up to $1.5 million, plus indirect costs, over five years.

Shenoy Undergraduate Research Fellowship in Neuroscience (SURFiN)

The Shenoy Undergraduate Research Fellowship in Neuroscience (SURFiN) program aims to spark and sustain interest in neuroscience among undergraduate students who have not had access to research training opportunities. SURFiN provides funds for paid, in-person undergraduate research assistantships during the academic year to students living near Simons Foundation-supported laboratories in the U.S., Canada and Europe. Fellows gain hands-on, in-person research experience with direct mentorship from early-career scientists such as graduate students and postdoctoral researchers. This program is specifically designed for students currently enrolled in a bachelor's or associate's degree program who have not had access to research training opportunities. Fellows participate in career development activities, including a virtual coding boot camp and a scientific symposium in New York City in spring 2027. The program is named in honor of neuroscientist Krishna Shenoy.
