The David H. Smith Conservation Research Fellowship Program (Smith Fellows) provides opportunities for early-career conservation scientists to pursue novel research, build professional networks, develop leadership skills, and apply science to address critical conservation problems in the U.S. and its territories. The program supports future leaders through two years of applied postdoctoral research, supplemented by training programs, peer networking, and field learning experiences, enabling fellows to build partnerships with conservation practitioners and advance engagement with conservation issues through communication, outreach, and diverse partnerships. The program operates as a partnership between the Society for Conservation Biology and the Cedar Tree Foundation.
