UNU-WIDER Visiting Scholars Programme

The UNU-WIDER Visiting Scholars Programme gives qualified scholars an opportunity to research topics related to development and/or global economic issues, and to participate in UNU-WIDER activities. Scholars typically spend a 2-3 months 'sabbatical' at UNU-WIDER in Helsinki, Finland. During this time they prepare one or more papers to be considered for publication in the WIDER working paper series, and present a seminar in their field of research. Applicants should have a PhD degree in economics or a development-related discipline. A good publication record is an added advantage. Applications from suitably qualified early-career, female, and developing country researchers are particularly encouraged. The programme prefers applicants whose research overlaps with UNU-WIDER's current research programme, but remains open to proposals on all aspects of development. UNU-WIDER provides medical insurance for sickness and accident during the stay, and a monthly stipend of EUR 3,330 as a contribution towards travel, visa, accommodation and other out-of-pocket expenses. Visiting scholars may apply for a supplementary grant to cover high travel costs exceeding EUR 1,200 for the lowest economy class fare, provided that the ticket is paid by the visiting scholar and no other travel grants are received from another source. Applications are received once each year with a deadline of 30 September 23:59 UTC+3. The online application form becomes active on 1 September each year. Selected applicants will be informed within eight weeks of the closing deadline and must confirm their decision within two weeks after being contacted.

Visiting PhD Fellowship

The UNU-WIDER Visiting PhD Fellowship Programme gives registered doctoral students the opportunity to utilize the resources and facilities at UNU-WIDER for their PhD dissertation or thesis research on developing economies, and to work with UNU-WIDER researchers in areas of mutual interest. Visiting PhD fellows typically spend three consecutive months at UNU-WIDER in Helsinki before returning to their home institution. During their time in Helsinki, fellows prepare one or more research papers and present a seminar on their research findings. They may also have the opportunity to publish their research in the WIDER Working Paper Series. The programme is highly competitive with only a limited number of fellows accepted each year. In recent years, one percent of all applications have been successful. The programme is especially addressed at researchers at later stages of their PhD.
