Alan Pattee Scholarship

The Alan Pattee Scholarship Act was passed by the California Legislature in 1970 under Assembly Bill 338. This scholarship provides an exemption towards mandatory systemwide tuition and fees and mandatory campus-based fees for eligible University of California students. The scholarship is specifically designed for surviving spouses or children of deceased public safety personnel who died in the line of duty. To qualify, applicants must be UC students and the surviving child or spouse of a deceased person who was a California resident employed in active law enforcement service or active fire suppression and prevention duties. The deceased must have passed away in the performance of these duties or died as a result of an accident or injury incurred while performing these duties. This includes employees of public agencies, contractors, or employees of contractors performing services for public agencies. For surviving spouses or children of contractors or contractor employees, additional requirements apply. These applicants must be enrolled as undergraduate students at a UC campus and demonstrate financial need based on their FAFSA or California Dream Act application. Their annual income, including support received from parents, must not exceed the maximum household income and asset level established for Cal Grant B applicants. The scholarship covers mandatory systemwide tuition and fees as well as mandatory campus-based fees. This fee exemption was extended to mandatory campus-based fees in 2020, providing comprehensive financial support to eligible students.
