About This Opportunity
The Achievement Scholarship for Refugees and Immigrants in Wake County provides financial awards for refugee and immigrant high school graduates who reside in Wake County to continue their education in a post-secondary setting. Established by Larry and Sue Yarger through their many years of volunteerism focused on mentoring and tutoring refugee and immigrant families, this scholarship recognizes the significant hardships and challenges these parents have endured to provide their children opportunities not available in their home countries. The goal of the scholarship is to support these students on a pathway to finding meaningful employment and becoming contributory members of their communities and adopted country. This opportunity is available to students planning to pursue a degree as full-time students at an accredited public, private, or technical college or university in North Carolina, including both 2-year and 4-year institutions. The scholarship provides up to $16,000 that may be used towards any need listed under the school's total cost of attendance. Payments are made annually for up to 4 years, and recipients must maintain a 2.5 GPA and submit semester reports in order to continue receiving funding. Students must be high school seniors who are immigrants, refugees, or first-generation US citizens residing in Wake County and planning to attend college in North Carolina.
