About this opportunity
Granted each fall to a full-time nursing student in the four year BScN program or two year Accelerated BScN program who displays excellence in bedside nursing while maintaining a satisfactory academic record. The recipient is determined based on their performance in clinical courses. The award was established by the Alumnae Association of the Prince Edward Island Hospital School of Nursing, which continues to be active and meets eight times per year. In September 2021, the Alumnae Association generously combined their annual gifts into one endowed fund to support one nursing award at UPEI in perpetuity.
The Prince Edward Island Hospital School of Nursing was one of the earliest nursing schools in Canada. In 1891, Miss Jessie Sheraton began training women to care for the sick at the PEI Hospital. The first class graduated two nurses in 1893, establishing a nursing school that operated for eighty years and graduated a total of 727 nurses before closing in 1971. The Alumnae Association was established in April 1939 with the object of maintaining honor of the nursing profession and promoting unity, good feeling, and loyalty among members.
