About this opportunity
The AR Davis Postgraduate Research Memorial Scholarship is a postgraduate research scholarship that aims to assist PhD students in Chinese Studies and Japanese Studies. This gift fund was established by staff from East Asian Studies in 1988 as a postgraduate award to honour the memory of A.R. Davis, a Professor of Oriental Studies from 1954 to 1983. The scholarship recognizes his contribution to the development of East Asian studies in Australia and helps preserve the tradition of independent study of which he was an exemplary practitioner.
The scholarship is designed to assist PhD students in Chinese Studies and Japanese Studies to undertake fieldwork, attend conferences, or with living expenses. The maximum value of the scholarship is $5,000 AUD for full-time students and $2,500 AUD for part-time students, with the specific value determined by the selection committee. Recipients are awarded based on academic merit and a personal statement detailing how the scholarship will assist them in their studies.
The scholarship is offered annually through the School of Languages and Cultures in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Sydney. Priority is given to applicants who have not previously been awarded the scholarship. The scholarship is paid as a one-off payment and cannot be deferred without prior approval or transferred to another area of research.
