About this opportunity
This award was established by the Auxiliary of the Protestant Family Service Bureau in memory of former member, Louise Haszard. The Ladies Auxiliary was established in 1959 to augment the financial relief program administered by the Bureau. While the Bureau dealt with providing groceries, fuel and shelter to those in need, the Auxiliary helped to provide clothing, bedding and furniture when needed. The Auxiliary was comprised of two members from each of the Charlottetown Protestant churches, with finances derived from the sale of clothing and donations. This enabled the Auxiliary to develop and maintain worthwhile projects including the notable Christmas Shop for low income families which served up to 700 children annually for 40 years. Other projects included free dental care for children and adolescents, a Share our Books program, and support for day care and day camps. Louise Haszard, a devoted member who passed in 1984, left funds in her Will with the stipulation that it be spent on children who needed help. After many years of service, when the Auxiliary disbanded in 2008, they granted their remaining funds to support students at UPEI planning to work in the fields of education, health and/or social services. This award is presented to a student entering 3rd or 4th year whose studies will guide them toward a vocation in Education, Health and/or Social Services.
