About This Opportunity

The Barry Goldwater Scholarship is one of the oldest and most prestigious national scholarships in the United States for undergraduate students pursuing research careers in the natural sciences, mathematics, and engineering. Established by Congress in 1986 to honor Senator Barry Goldwater's 56 years of public service, the program identifies, encourages, and financially supports college sophomores and juniors who demonstrate exceptional potential to become the next generation of research leaders in fields essential to national security and global competitiveness. The Foundation awards approximately 400-450 scholarships annually to students nominated by their institutions. Over its history, the program has awarded scholarships to more than 11,000 undergraduates, many of whom have gone on to win other prestigious awards such as the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship, Rhodes Scholarship, Churchill Scholarship, and the National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship. Today, Goldwater alumni can be found conducting research that defends the nation, finds cures for diseases, and teaches future generations of scientists. The scholarship provides financial support to cover educational expenses, with approximately $2.5 million awarded annually. Students must be nominated through their institution's Campus Representative, submit a research essay, and provide three letters of recommendation. The program is managed by Scholarship America and overseen by a 13-member Board of Trustees appointed by the President and Congress.
