About This Opportunity

The Catholic Community Foundation of Southwest Florida offers the Barry L. Carey, M.D. Scholarship, an academic scholarship made possible through the Catholic Legacy of Dr. Barry Carey and his loving family. This renewable scholarship of approximately $400 is available to graduating seniors from Catholic schools, private schools, home schools, or public schools in the Diocese of Venice Counties who will be first generation in their family to attend college or university. The scholarship can be used for tuition, books, fees, and housing expenses at an accredited college or university. Eligible students must be current high school seniors in one of ten counties in the Diocese of Venice (Sarasota, Charlotte, Lee, DeSoto, Glades, Hardee, Hendry, Highlands, Manatee, and Collier Counties). Applicants must complete an online application with financial needs assessment, submit verification of parish affiliation, provide an essay on what their Catholic faith has meant to them and how it has impacted their life, and demonstrate acceptance into an accredited college or university. The selection process considers academic performance in high school, extracurricular activities including volunteering, work, clubs, and teams, as well as financial need. The scholarship is renewable and aims to support first-generation college students from Catholic communities in Southwest Florida. Members or relatives of the Catholic Community Foundation staff, Board of Directors, the Office of Catholic Schools, the Scholarship Committee, or Barry L. Carey are ineligible to apply.
