About this opportunity
The Belcourt Brosseau Métis Awards (BBMAs) support Métis Albertans with scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $10,000 each year for post-secondary education. Established in 2001 by the directors of the Canative Housing Corporation—Orval Belcourt, Dr. Herb Belcourt, and Georges Brosseau QC—the program's vision was to help Métis Albertans realize self-sufficiency through post-secondary education and skills development.
Over the past twenty years, the Belcourt Brosseau Métis Awards have provided more than $10.5 million to approximately 2,600 Métis students studying at institutions across Alberta. These awards are one of the largest non-governmental sources of student funding for Métis students in Canada. The program is currently able to support approximately half of the Métis Albertans that apply each year, funding around 200 of the 400 applicants.
To be eligible, applicants must have membership with the Otipemisiwak Métis Government or a Métis Settlement (or be in the process of receiving citizenship or membership), be an Alberta resident with Canadian citizenship, and be studying in an eligible program at an eligible post-secondary institution. Applications open on January 2nd and close on March 31st each year.
