Fellowship Scholarship

Bi-nationally Supervised Doctoral Degrees / Cotutelle

DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst) Original Source

About This Opportunity

This programme offers the opportunity to complete a bi-national doctoral degree at a home university and at a university in Germany. There are two options: Option a) Doctorate with bi-national supervision under the 'sandwich model', where the doctoral project is supervised by university teachers at both the home university and the German host institute, with research trips to Germany while completing the doctorate in the home country. Option b) Doctorate following the 'Cotutelle' procedure, where doctoral projects are carried out at both universities based on an individual cooperation agreement, with both universities jointly awarding the doctoral degree upon successful completion. The programme provides flexible funding for research stays in Germany between 7 and 24 months as part of the overall doctoral project. Funding includes monthly stipends during stays in Germany, travel allowances, health insurance coverage, and research allowances. Additional benefits may include language course support, rent subsidies for longer stays, and family allowances. The scholarship is funded by the German Federal Foreign Office and administered by DAAD.
