About this opportunity
The Brian Fox Scholarship in English Literature was established by Brian Fox in 2017 through the Victoria University of Wellington Foundation, with an additional sum added following his death in 2020. Brian Fox began his university education in 1946 but was unable to finish it due to degenerating eyesight. He completed a Teaching Diploma at Wellington Teachers College and enjoyed a forty-year career as a highly respected teacher and Principal, including being the first to teach English as a second language to Colombo Plan students in the early 1960s. The purpose of this scholarship is to encourage further study of English Literature.
The scholarship is available to students who have completed their first year of an undergraduate degree at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington and are enrolling in their 2nd or 3rd or honours year the following year majoring in English Literature. Two scholarships of $10,000 each are offered annually (subject to funds available). The scholarship will be awarded based on academic merit and consideration of the personal statement and writing sample. Previous recipients are able to apply for this scholarship in subsequent years.
The scholarship will be paid in two equal instalments in trimester one and trimester two. Recipients must be New Zealand citizens and will be selected by the Head of School of English, Film Theatre, Media and Communication and Art History (or nominee) who will consult with relevant and appropriate English programme staff. Recipients are expected to act as Ambassadors for Victoria University of Wellington and participate in appropriate events or marketing if requested.
