About this opportunity
The Brian Fox Scholarship in History was established in 2017 through the Victoria University of Wellington Foundation, with additional funds added following Brian Fox's death in 2020. Brian Fox began his university education in 1946 but was unable to complete it due to degenerating eyesight, though he enjoyed a forty-year career as a highly respected teacher and Principal, including being the first to teach English as a second language to Colombo Plan students in the early 1960s.
The scholarship provides $10,000 (subject to funds available) to support students majoring in History who have completed their first year of an undergraduate degree at Victoria University of Wellington. Recipients must be New Zealand citizens enrolling in their 2nd, 3rd, or honours year. The purpose of this scholarship is to encourage further study of History, honoring Brian Fox's lifelong commitment to education.
The scholarship is awarded based on academic merit, personal statements, and references. Recipients are selected by the Head of School of History, Philosophy, Political Science and International Relations or their nominee. The award is paid in two equal instalments in trimester one and trimester two, and recipients are expected to act as Ambassadors for Victoria University of Wellington.
