About this opportunity
Awarded to returning nursing students who intend to pursue an international experience as part of their UPEI education. Preference given to students who display attributes of future professionalism such as integrity, stability, empathy and commitment and have orchestrated their own learning opportunities abroad. These scholarships have been established through the estate of C. Jean (Ross) MacKay, nurse, mother, volunteer and a strong advocate for higher learning. C. Jean (Ross) MacKay was born and raised in Roseberry, PEI. She was the only girl in a family of eight children. She pursued and early career as a school teacher and later attended the PEI School of Nursing in Charlottetown. Jean was very proud of her nursing career and made life-long friends studying and practicing nursing at the Prince Edward Island Hospital. She met her husband, G. Stewart MacKay during her nursing career and they had five children. Jean was very active as a volunteer in her church, with the IODE and the Confederation Centre. She was a member of the Ft. Lauderdale Historical Society and took art courses at UPEI. She is remembered as a confident, sophisticated, bright, caring and kind woman. She always looked at the brighter side of things and sought out the best in people. Jean passed away on February 23, 2012. Her children are honoured to award these scholarships in her memory.
