About This Opportunity

The Canada Graduate Research Scholarship – Doctoral (CGRS D) is a prestigious doctoral scholarship program offered through three Canadian federal research agencies: the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). This scholarship supports outstanding doctoral students across all academic disciplines at Canadian universities, including the University of Waterloo. The program is open to both Canadian/permanent residents and international students with study permits, making it an inclusive opportunity for exceptional doctoral researchers regardless of their citizenship status. The scholarship is available across all graduate programs and faculties at the University of Waterloo, including Arts, Engineering, Environment, Health, Mathematics, and Science. Prior to Fall 2025, recipients were awarded various program names including the CIHR Doctoral Foreign Study Award (DFSA), NSERC Postgraduate Scholarships Doctoral (PGS D), SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship, Canada Graduate Scholarship – Doctoral (CGS D), or the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship. The program requires a competitive application process, and students must contact their department graduate coordinator for specific eligibility criteria, selection processes, and award values.
