About This Opportunity
The Carolyn Francis Indigenous or International Student Travel Award is granted to a student who is enrolled in a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) or Bachelor of Education with French as a Second Language (B.Ed. FLS) program with an International or Indigenous Focus. The award supports students who will travel as a component of their program and demonstrates financial need. Applicants must provide no more than two pages demonstrating how they have tried to meet their financial challenges in terms of their travelling budget. If there are two or more equally qualifying candidates, the greatest financial need will be the deciding factor. This award honors Carolyn Francis, who holds a B.Sc. in Agriculture, a diploma in Education from MacDonald College of McGill University, and a Masters in School Administration from the University of Moncton. She retired in 2002 after 33 years as a teacher and school administrator and joined UPEI as a Sessional Instructor and coordinator of the Bachelor of Education program. Her volunteer work includes international projects through the Canadian Teachers' Federation and Farmers Helping Farmers, as well as community involvement with her local church, Camp Abegweit, and the Kensington Refugee Sponsorship Initiative. She has received numerous awards including the Governor General's Caring Canadian Award, United Church National Camping Award, UPEI Exemplary Service Award, and a lifetime membership to Farmers Helping Farmers. Support for UPEI's International and Indigenous practicum has been one of her passions during her time at UPEI.
