Chafee Foster Youth Grant

The Chafee Foster Youth Grant is a California state grant program that provides financial assistance to current or former foster youth who demonstrate financial need. The grant offers up to $5,000 annually to support qualified students pursuing higher education at eligible California institutions including UC Berkeley. Administered by the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC), this grant is designed specifically to support foster youth in their educational pursuits. The grant does not reduce other financial aid awards received by students and is treated separately from other financial assistance under the Consolidated Appropriations Act. Students must be enrolled at least half-time (6 units minimum) and maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress to receive disbursements. The grant is renewable annually as long as students continue to meet eligibility requirements and complete either the FAFSA or California Dream Act Application each year.
