About this opportunity
The University of Birmingham offers up to 10 joint-funded PhD scholarships in collaboration with the China Scholarship Council (CSC) for candidates starting a PhD programme in Autumn 2026. These competitive scholarships cover full tuition fees at the overseas rate and any associated bench fees, paid by the University of Birmingham, while the China Scholarship Council provides a maintenance stipend and return international airfare. The scholarships are available across a wide variety of research fields, with priority given to students in areas including rail decarbonisation, sustainable future of plastics, water science, sustainable cities, quantum technologies, air pollution, liver transplantation, cancer immunology, microbiology and infection, healthcare technologies, health data, ageing, youth mental health, African studies, responsible business, inclusive education, global ethics, ancient texts, and superdiversity. Candidates must meet eligibility criteria set by both the CSC and the University, hold a People's Republic of China passport, and secure an unconditional or conditionally acceptable offer of admission to a PhD programme at Birmingham.

Review process
Candidates must express interest to their proposed supervisor by February 6, 2026. Each college shortlists candidates and nominates them. Nominated candidates' details are sent to CSC for final review and selection. CSC makes final funding decisions announced in June.
