About This Opportunity

The Complex Educational Needs Study Award is an annual study award offered by the Ministry of Education in New Zealand to support early learning kaiako and school teachers in completing Massey University's Postgraduate Diploma in Specialist Teaching (Complex Educational Needs). The award provides comprehensive financial support including full domestic tuition fees paid directly to Massey University, contributions towards travel and accommodation for attending block courses, and an employer contribution to cover teacher release time for up to 50 study leave days per year. This award is designed for registered teachers with current practicing certificates working in state or state-integrated schools, or registered early childhood services. Priority is given to applicants in Māori medium and English medium settings who are responsible for planning and teaching diverse student groups, students requiring additional support, or supporting Communities of Learning (Kāhui Ako). Applicants must have a minimum of 3 years teaching experience, employer approval and support, rights to live and work in New Zealand permanently, and a relevant professional qualification such as a Bachelor of Education or equivalent. The award is open to teachers working in various roles including kaiako, specialist support staff, specialist teachers, Special Education Needs Coordinators (SENCO), specialist teacher Ongoing Resource Scheme (ORS), heads of department for learning support, specialist classroom teachers, and early learning head teachers. Applications open on 1 August each year and close on 12 September, with successful applicants notified on 25 November. Applicants must simultaneously apply to Massey University for admission to the diploma program. Teachers employed in relieving positions, those not accepted into the qualification program, or those who have previously received the award and failed the course are not eligible to apply.
