About This Opportunity

This scholarship was established in 2017 by Copyright Licensing New Zealand to encourage growth in the industry, to advocate publishing in New Zealand, to support students enrolled in the Creative Writing Programme, and to motivate the next generation of writers. The scholarship supports students who have applied into the MA Creative Writing programme at the International Institute of Modern Letters at Te Herenga Waka–Victoria University of Wellington. Recipients must be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents, with preference given to Māori and Pasifika applicants. The scholarship provides $5,000 for one year of study. Applicants must provide a written overview of the work they intend to undertake during their MA study. As part of the application process, it is established that the work being undertaken does not infringe upon any copyright law. Recipients receive additional benefits including one year membership to the NZ Society of Authors and are required to write a blog post for Copyright Licensing New Zealand's website and attend the Authors Association first Writer's Forum in September. The scholarship cannot be deferred and may be held in conjunction with other awards. Recipients are expected to act as Ambassadors for Victoria University of Wellington and participate in appropriate events or marketing if requested. If the recipient withdraws from the university or fails to achieve satisfactory progress, partial repayment is normally expected.
