About this opportunity
The Cox Research Scholarship is a need-based scholarship program for Indiana residents of exemplary achievement and scholarly curiosity. The program pairs high-achieving, hard-working students according to their interests with an IU faculty member who is willing to take on an inexperienced first-year scholar to teach the skills and tools required to conduct meaningful scholarly inquiry or creative activity. All Cox Research Scholars are admitted to the Hutton Honors College, where they may choose to pursue an Honors Notation.
Cox Research Scholars are required to work an average of 10 to 12 hours per week on their assigned project in addition to being a full-time student and maintaining a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. Students may be expected to complete tasks as assigned to assist their mentor. In the first year, the mentorship may look more like an assistantship. By the second or third year, students build the proficiency and confidence to perform essential elements of a project as full contributing members of a research or creative activity work group and may have the freedom to pursue an individual project as well.
The emphasis of the program is on the process of learning how to conduct research or delve deeply into a specific field with a professor. Students are encouraged to present their work to the IU community via poster and research symposia. The scholarship is renewable for a total of four years (eight semesters) and includes participation in Camp Cox, a five-day immersive leadership development experience held at Bradford Woods in late July.
