About this opportunity
The Dan Smith Visual Journalism Scholarship honors Daniel R. Smith (1955-2025), an award-winning professional photographer and publications consultant who served as Photo Editor of the Massachusetts Daily Collegian and Editor-In-Chief of the UMass Index Yearbook. Launched by his partner Heidi Berenson ('79), this scholarship supports students passionate about visual journalism across all formats, including digital, video, print, television, short documentaries, and various broadcast formats (telecasts, webcasts, etc.).
Journalism majors are eligible for this award, as well as non-majors who produce visual journalism at the Collegian or other UMass campus media outlets such as WMUA, UVC-TV19, and the Amherst Wire. The scholarship recognizes students who demonstrate creativity and excellence in visual storytelling, following in Dan Smith's legacy of innovation and kindness in the field of visual journalism.
Students with financial need are especially encouraged to apply, though financial need is a preference rather than a requirement. The award provides $1,500 to support students pursuing careers in visual journalism and storytelling.
