About this opportunity
This special scholarship is named in memory of Derek Wandzura, a charming little boy who passed away at the age of nine after a four-year battle with medulloblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer. Derek was diagnosed on Christmas Eve in 1986 at the age of five. During his cancer journey, Derek relapsed three times and endured countless medical procedures. The scholarship honors Derek's spirit by supporting young people who are childhood cancer patients or survivors in pursuing their post-secondary educational dreams. As the namesake of the scholarship, Derek's spirit lives on in the countless young people who live their dreams, thrive and do great things with the help of a scholarship in his name. The scholarship is available to childhood cancer patients or survivors who were diagnosed at age 18 or younger, are residents of Southern Alberta (including Red Deer and all communities south), and have applied to or are enrolled in a post-secondary education institute anywhere in the world. Universities, colleges, technical institutes and learning centres for academic upgrading are all acceptable institutes.
