About this opportunity
This PhD research opportunity focuses on the Open Radio Access Network (ORAN) architecture and its integration of AI and ML in access networks. The project will study the modelling and analysis of digital twins for real time resource optimization and performance prediction in wireless networks. The ORAN architecture leverages ML and AI techniques within xApps and rApps to autonomously analyze network data and make intelligent decisions to optimize network performance. The research addresses the significant risk of quality deterioration when deploying ML in live networks, using digital twins to analyze, predict and update network operations.
The position is funded through an EPSRC Doctoral Landscape Award, providing full academic fees and a tax-free maintenance grant at the standard UKRI rate (£20,780 in academic session 2025/26) for 3.5 years. Training and support will also be provided. This highly competitive opportunity is open to UK applicants only, with selection based on academic merit.
Applicants should have at least a first class or upper second class British Bachelors Honours degree in an appropriate discipline. The research will be supervised by Dr Maryam Hafeez and Mr Syed Zaidi in the Institute of Communication and Power Networks at the School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering.
