About This Opportunity

This award is presented to an Atlantic Veterinary College graduate student enrolled in the first or second year of the Master of Veterinary Science (MVSc) program. The award is based on the quality of presentation at the annual Graduate Studies and Research Days at AVC. The scholarship was established by Dr. Basil Ikede and his wife Joy Ikede at the Atlantic Veterinary College at the University of Prince Edward Island. Dr. Basil Ikede came to Prince Edward Island, Canada, from Nigeria, West Africa, in 1989 as professor of pathology at the AVC, retiring in 2007. He received his DVM degree from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria in 1967, a Diploma in Diagnostic Pathology from the Ontario Veterinary College, University of Guelph in 1971, and a PhD in Veterinary Pathology from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria in 1972. He taught veterinary pathology at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Ibadan for over 20 years and was Professor and Head of Department there (1979-1987) before coming to the AVC-UPEI. As Department Chair at the AVC (2000-2006), Dr. Ikede initiated the Master of Veterinary Science (MVSc) graduate program which has now been embraced by other departments in the College.
