About this opportunity
This scholarship is awarded to a full-time Prince Edward Island student majoring in Sociology, Anthropology, or Sociology/Anthropology who is entering fourth year at the University of Prince Edward Island. The recipient must have attained the highest overall average in their previous 20 courses and cannot be receiving any other UPEI scholarship. The award honors Dr. Clarence J. Murphy (1911-1986), a distinguished professor who taught Economics and Sociology at Saint Dunstan's University (SDU), Prince William's College (PWC), and later at UPEI from 1942 until his retirement in 1974. Dr. Murphy was born in Montague, PEI, received his Bachelor of Arts from SDU in 1934 and earned both M.A. and Ph.D. from Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. Throughout his teaching career, he participated extensively in university affairs, serving as Department Chairman and as a member of The Board of Governors and Senate. He was also active in the co-operative and credit union movements in Prince Edward Island. The family of Dr. Clarence J. Murphy established this award in his memory to support students pursuing studies in the social sciences.
