About this opportunity
The Dr. J. Regis Duffy Graduate Scholarships in Science are awarded to graduate students who have demonstrated excellence and are pursuing a Masters or PhD graduate degree in the area of Science at the University of Prince Edward Island. These scholarships were established by Dr. J. Regis Duffy, a distinguished scientist who graduated from St. Dunstan's University (one of UPEI's predecessor institutions) with a Bachelor of Arts in 1953 and later earned a PhD in Chemistry from Fordham University in 1962. Dr. Duffy became the first dean of Science at the newly established University of Prince Edward Island in 1969. He went on to become a successful entrepreneur, founding Diagnostic Chemicals Ltd., which grew from modest beginnings to employ more than 250 people and was eventually sold to Genzyme Corporation in 2007. He also established BioVectra, a company manufacturing and marketing more than 400 products. Dr. Duffy has had a lifelong commitment to the well-being of his employees and the health of the PEI economy, and has supported UPEI in many ways including serving as chair of the UPEI Board of Governors for 10 years. As the University continues to grow in the area of research and development, these scholarships are critical to attracting graduate students who display immense promise and a drive for excellence and discovery.
