About this opportunity
Awarded to a full-time student pursuing research in a graduate program within the Faculty of Science Department of Chemistry at the University of Prince Edward Island. The candidate will have an undergraduate record of distinction. This award was established in memory of Dr. Robert Haines, who joined the UPEI community in August 1996 and had a distinguished career until his untimely death in September 2007. Dr. Haines was a Chemistry professor and later served as Chair of the Chemistry Department and was appointed Chief Research Officer of the PEI Health Research Institute at UPEI. He was the recipient of the UPEI Merit Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2002, elected to the Fellowship of the Canadian Institute of Chemistry in 2002, and in 2003 he was appointed to the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. He was also a recipient of the UPEI Merit Award for Outstanding Scholarly Achievement. Dr. Haines received numerous research funding awards and had many publications to his credit. His primary research interests concerned the understanding of mechanisms of reactions of molecules containing metal atoms, specifically platinum, palladium, and vanadium, whose compounds have application to health (anti-cancer drugs) and industrial processes (anti-corrosion treatments and catalysis). In memory of Dr. Haines, friends, family, and colleagues created this graduate research award in his honor.
