About this opportunity
This scholarship award has been made possible by a gift from Dr. Elaine N. Marieb, who wanted to create a scholarship to assist deserving students who have, because of family or financial circumstances, had to interrupt their education. This reflects the donor's own personal history, as she had to leave school for a number of years and was only able to return to her education as the result of a scholarship. Dr. Marieb graduated with a degree, took several graduate degrees including a PhD in Zoology, an RN degree and a Masters degree in nursing, and became a leading biology textbook author.
The scholarship is specifically designed for returning students who have had to interrupt their education for three or more years prior to returning or seeking admission to UMass Amherst. Recipients must have completed at least two semesters at an accredited community college, college or university and have achieved a GPA of 3.0 before making application to UMass Amherst. Selection is based on financial need and past academic performance.
Recipients must remain full-time students, carrying at least 12 academic hours, and must maintain a 3.0 GPA to continue to be eligible for these scholarships. Recipients must plan to graduate three years or sooner after admission to UMass Amherst. This award represents Dr. Marieb's commitment to helping students overcome obstacles and complete their education.
