About this opportunity

The Emmerson Family Medical Scholarship was established in 2021 by Professor Brett Emmerson AM and Mrs Alanna Emmerson to assist the next generation of medical students overcome financial obstacles to achieve their career goals. This scholarship is part of the Medical Student Financial Aid Scholarships Scheme at The University of Queensland and provides financial support to students enrolled full-time in year 1 of the Doctor of Medicine program who can demonstrate financial hardship. Professor Emmerson is a Class of 1979 UQ medical graduate who served as a psychiatrist and was the Executive Director for Mental Health Services at the Royal Brisbane Woman's Hospital and later Metro North Health from 1997-2022. He was also Queensland's first Chief Psychiatrist from 1991-1994. The scholarship aims to help students overcome financial barriers to complete their medical education. Applicants must provide a personal statement of no more than 250 words outlining their background, financial need, attempts to mitigate difficulties, and how the scholarship will assist in completing the Doctor of Medicine program. Selection is based on demonstrated financial need, academic achievement, strength of personal statement, and other relevant factors.
