About this opportunity

The English for Heritage Language Speakers (EHLS) Program is a scholarship initiative of the Defense Language and National Security Education Office (DLNSEO) designed to enhance English language proficiency for individuals who are heritage speakers of critical languages. The program provides intensive English language instruction combined with professional development opportunities to prepare participants for careers in the federal government. The EHLS Program offers a comprehensive curriculum that includes English language training focused on developing professional-level proficiency in listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Participants must demonstrate existing proficiency in both English (minimum ILR Level 2) and a critical language (minimum ILR Level 3) to qualify for the program. The scholarship covers the cost of participation in the intensive program, which includes language instruction, professional development, and preparation for federal government employment. Applicants are evaluated based on five selection criteria: language goals and motivation, cultural knowledge, research skills, professional adaptability, and compatibility with the federal workplace. The program typically selects up to 18 participants from approximately 50 provisionally selected candidates who undergo additional skills testing. Selected participants receive comprehensive training and support to enhance their career prospects in federal government positions that require both English proficiency and critical language skills.
