About this opportunity

The starting grant within viruses and pandemics aims to provide junior researchers with the opportunity to establish themselves as independent researchers in Sweden within the field of viruses and pandemics. The Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet) rewards research of the highest scientific quality in national competition. The grant covers research on knowledge gaps from a broad perspective including basic virological research, fundamental viral disease mechanisms, virus-caused pandemics and their effects on society and public health, zoonoses, development of drugs, vaccines, diagnostics and treatments, equitable health during pandemics, and appropriate organization and coordination of important societal functions during a virus-caused pandemic. The program encompasses research within one or more of five focus areas: (1) viruses, viral disease states and basic disease mechanisms, (2) mechanisms for emergence and spread of zoonoses with pandemic potential and strategies for prevention and management, (3) development of antiviral drugs, vaccines and diagnostics, (4) societal measures arising from pandemics and their effects on people's living conditions and health, and (5) organization, governance and coordination of important societal functions during a pandemic. The grant provides 1,500,000 SEK per year for 4 years and is intended for individual researchers who obtained their doctoral degree more than 2 years and up to 7 years before the application deadline.
