About This Opportunity

EIC Advanced Innovation Challenges aim to support high-risk, demand-driven deep tech innovation with transformative potential especially in areas where there is extensive research but lack of commercial uptake. This pilot aims to assess whether competitive, stage-gated support can accelerate the path to market for high-risk deep tech innovations, and whether early integration of demand-side actors can enhance the relevance, validation, and ultimately the uptake of breakthrough solutions. The pilot provides evidence on whether these mechanisms lead to more efficient innovation cycles and broader market adoption than other instruments within Horizon Europe. The 2026 pilot includes two specific challenges: Challenge 1 focuses on Accelerating Physical AI with embodied intelligence for AI-powered robotics, addressing areas like disaster response, autonomous scientific labs, and personal/professional robot assistants. Challenge 2 focuses on translating disruptive New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) into practice to replace, reduce or refine animal use in testing medicinal products, including preclinical biomedical research and testing of medicinal products for safety, efficacy, or quality. The program operates in two stages: Stage 1 provides funding to prepare and benchmark breakthrough solutions and explore their feasibility and viability. Stage 2 then supports the most promising solutions to further develop and test them in real-world environments with user involvement. Applications must demonstrate technical readiness (TRL 4 minimum), stakeholder interest through letters of intent, and access to appropriate testing infrastructure.
