About This Opportunity

The Experience Israel Travel Scholarships have been established by the Fund for Jewish Higher Education to support students undertaking the study abroad unit OLES2155: Experience Israel. The scholarship provides financial support valued at $1,400 towards travel expenses to Israel such as airfare and accommodation. Experience Israel involves full immersion in the local culture of Jerusalem and the chance to commence studies in Modern Hebrew with Hebrew university-level teachers. Taught in Jerusalem, the program includes 40 hours of face-to-face teaching and up to 15 hours of cultural activities, including intercultural competence development in the form of a seminar. Cultural activities include visits to historical and cultural sites in Jerusalem and surrounding towns. Students will be introduced to Hebrew contemporary culture and society as well as the basics of Hebrew language and conversational skills through immersion. The scholarship is awarded based on academic merit and a personal statement, with preference given to applicants who demonstrate financial hardship. Priority consideration is provided to students who identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, have low socio-economic status, carer responsibilities, long-term medical conditions/disabilities, sole-parent responsibilities, regional or remote disadvantage, refugee status, identify as LGBTIQ+, and/or are first in family. Preference may also be given to students enrolled in Modern Hebrew or Jewish Civilisation units and those who have not received other funding support for the Israel trip.
