About this opportunity

The Norwegian Ministry of Defence has since 1994 contributed to relevant research-based competence on security and defence policy issues in Norway by financing specific projects that analyze security and defence policy topics of particular interest to the Ministry and the Armed Forces. The funding scheme supports research institutes, colleges and universities with competence in security and defence policy subject areas. The scheme is distributed between support for individual research projects, thematic programs and Ph.D. scholarships of up to four years duration. The purpose of the funding scheme is threefold: to stimulate security and defence policy competence environments, to contribute to strengthened knowledge and insight in the public through dissemination, and to support research work that can be used in the defence sector's knowledge base for planning and policy formulation. From 2026 onwards, the Ministry will only allocate funds to research projects with a duration of two or three years, no longer for one-year projects. For 2026, funds are announced for multi-year research projects and two Ph.D. scholarships.
