About this opportunity

The Frances A. Ross Anthropology Preliminary Dissertation Research Award supports preliminary dissertation research conducted within the United States by graduate Anthropology students at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. This award is specifically designed to help PhD students conduct domestic research that will inform their dissertation work. The funding provides financial support for travel and research activities during summer or fall periods. Recipients are required to submit a major external grant proposal (such as NSF or Wenner-Gren) by January 15 of the following year after receiving the award. This requirement ensures that the preliminary research is leveraged toward securing larger funding opportunities. Failure to submit the required external grant proposal will result in ineligibility for future departmental fellowships, though exceptions may be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. The award is made possible through the Estate of Frances A. Ross and is administered through the UW-Milwaukee Anthropology Department within the College of Letters & Science.
