About this opportunity
The Frank Ledwell Memorial Scholarship in English is awarded to a student entering 2nd, 3rd or 4th year who is majoring in English or English honours with a strong academic performance and who has shown particular engagement with the written word. This scholarship was established at the University of Prince Edward Island by friends and family of the late Frank Ledwell, B.A., M.A., O.P.E.I., Professor Emeritus of English. Mr. Ledwell was born in St. Peter's Bay, PEI, and graduated from one of UPEI's predecessor institutions, St. Dunstan's University, in 1951 followed by the seminary and Notre Dame University. He served as Prince Edward Island Poet Laureate and was revered as a gifted storyteller. He served as principal of the high school at St. Dunstan's before accepting a position as professor in the Department of English. As a colleague, he was always willing to help, and was exceptionally reliable and hard-working. While most widely known for his teaching and written poetry and prose, Mr. Ledwell was also a sports enthusiast and coach, with an encyclopaedic knowledge of sports trivia and history.
