Fulbright Hildeman Fellowship for Scandinavian Studies

Swedish Fulbright Commission Original Source

About This Opportunity

The Fulbright Hildeman Fellowship was established in 1986 by the Swedish Fulbright Commission in commemoration of Mr. Nils-Gustav Hildeman, a prominent Swedish diplomat and former Fulbright Board member. The fellowship promotes the study of Scandinavian language and area studies in the United States by supporting Swedish scholars to teach and conduct research at selected U.S. universities. The primary objectives of the Hildeman Fellowship are to encourage students and faculty in Scandinavian studies, to strengthen contacts between Swedish and American academics, and to increase interest in Sweden and Swedish area studies among American students and scholars in a variety of fields. Each year, a different U.S. university is selected to host the Fulbright Fellow for one academic semester. Scholars are chosen based on their academic merit and leadership potential. The Fulbright Program expects their grantees to demonstrate outstanding academic performance and actively contribute to the promotion of mutual understanding as unofficial ambassadors of their country. Preference is given to candidates who have not studied for an extended period of time at a university in the United States. For the 2026-27 academic year, North Park University will host the Hildeman Fellow during spring semester, January-May 2027. The fellowship provides a cash grant, travel allowance, visa fee coverage, insurance, and additional benefits as specified by the host university.
