About this opportunity
The Gertrude B. Elion Mentored Medical Student Research Award provides annual awards in the amount of $10,000 to support women medical students who are interested in pursuing health-related research projects. Students must have an interest in health research and must have the support of a faculty mentor. This award is specifically designed to support women medical students who have completed at least one year of study at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine or are enrolled in NC State's Combined DVM/PhD Degree program.
The award should be spent for the academic enrichment of the student. Examples of appropriate expenditures include attending outside short courses, travel to scholarly meetings, purchase of a computer for personal use, or books for personal use. No indirect costs may be charged against the grant, and the budget may not include student stipend support, university tuition, or general reagents for the laboratory. This is a one-time payment designed to enhance the research training and career development of women pursuing health-related research careers.
The application process requires submission through an online portal and includes a sponsor's statement of nomination, curriculum vitae from both candidate and mentor, a detailed research plan with scientific abstract, budget, and letter of recommendation. The program emphasizes mentorship and institutional support as key components of the award structure.
