About this opportunity
The Giller Mantella Scholarship supports Black, Indigenous, and racialized students pursuing English Literature, Writing, or Creative Writing at Canadian post-secondary institutions. This scholarship addresses critical gaps in Canadian literature by providing meaningful financial support to BIPOC students who face systemic barriers to access in the literary field. Each year, three exceptional BIPOC students receive $10,000 scholarships to help them focus on their studies and build their futures in Canadian literature.
The scholarship was established in 2024 as a partnership between the Mantella Corporation and the Giller Foundation, representing a sustained commitment to changing the landscape of Canadian literature through action. The program recognizes that while racialized people make up over 26% of Canada's population, BIPOC authors remain significantly underrepresented in Canadian publishing, literary prizes, and academic faculty positions.
Applications are accepted annually with a focus on students who demonstrate exceptional talent but lack realistic pathways to turn their promise into literary careers. The scholarship aims to signal that BIPOC students belong in Canadian literature and that their stories and voices are essential to the future of the field.
