About this opportunity
The Helen Sharp Undergraduate Scholarship in Modern Languages is a generous scholarship funded by Durham University alumna Helen Sharp (née Potts) to support talented students from low-income backgrounds pursuing undergraduate studies in Modern Languages and Cultures. The scholarship provides financial assistance of up to £4,000 per annum for up to four years to help cover tuition, living costs, and other associated costs of study.
This opportunity is specifically designed to promote academic excellence and enhance career prospects for students who demonstrate financial need and have been educated at state-maintained UK schools, colleges, or other secondary education providers throughout their education. The scholarship will be available for students beginning their undergraduate studies in the 2026-27 academic year.
Applications from students of Black Heritage, care-leavers, refugees, and asylum-seekers are particularly warmly welcomed. The scholarship aims to make the same transformative university experiences available to everyone, regardless of financial background, providing access to Durham's comprehensive Modern Languages program which offers teaching in francophone language and culture, literature, history, film, and more.
