About This Opportunity

The Institute of Current World Affairs advances deep understanding of global cultures and affairs by sending outstanding young professionals on independent writing fellowships abroad. Fellows receive full financial support for two years to pursue self-designed immersive research projects in foreign countries, submitting monthly dispatches about their research, travel and cultural experiences. The fellowship is designed to enrich public life in the United States by advancing understanding of foreign countries, cultures and trends. Fellows work closely with an executive director who serves as writing coach, editor and mentor. This is not a scholarship, degree program, or freelance journalism opportunity, but rather a transformative immersive experience focused on developing local knowledge and writing skills. Currently, ICWA is awarding a nuclear disarmament education fellowship to begin in summer or fall 2026.
