About this opportunity
The Irene Rhynes Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a full-time student enrolled in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Prince Edward Island. The scholarship supports students who express an interest in history, poetry, or international studies, and who maintain an academic average of at least 75%. Preference is given to students who are not already receiving a scholarship of $600 or more. This annual scholarship was originally established in memory of Susanah Irene Rhynes by her nephew John R. Rhynes to assist students working towards a Bachelor of Arts degree. In 2004, John and his parents, Alex and Agnes Rhynes, perpetuated the memorial scholarships by establishing an endowment. Irene Rhynes was born at Frenchfort, Prince Edward Island on March 25, 1924. Despite being affected by polio at age two, which required her to wear a brace and walk on crutches throughout her life, Irene maintained a deep love for learning and education. She particularly admired the University and its dedication to students, and always regretted not being able to continue her education past grade five due to limited facilities for students with disabilities at that time. Her family established this scholarship to honor her memory and her lifelong passion for education and learning.
